We have had a wonderful journey as we opened our bookshop in Shrewsbury in September 2016. It all seems so far away now and so much has changed. As the High Street is considering how to adapt and change in light of the ongoing Covid-19 and looking to re-open from next week we are having to announce that we are sadly not in a position to re-open.
After a challenging start to 2020 and our inability to continue to cover our costs we are not in a position to re-open and have to say goodbye to Button and Bear. As well as struggling with Covid-19 we started the year off with scaffolding which appeared (and is still in place) surrounding our shop, blocking our window & causing customers to cross over away from our shop. This was followed by flooding in Shrewsbury cutting off the town centre with car parks closed for up to 3 weeks. Each one of these we may have been able to recover from but now without our events, with restricted numbers of customers we are not able to continue to meet our overheads.
The highlight of the year has been that we have won Independent Bookshop of the Year – Midland Region. We are so pleased to have achieved this & gives us something positive to end on. As with everything we have done we couldn’t have done it without you, our customers.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us over these 4 years as we sought to help children and families create memories of a book filled childhood.
We didn’t do it alone and would like to thank our amazing staff – Jessie, Ellie, Naomi, Sue, Laura, Alice, Sian and Ami who have helped bring our vision to life. We must remember the staff who started the journey with us and who helped in the early days – Charmaine, Anneli and Jackie.
A thank you to the organisations who understood that we were trying to do more than just sell books and with whom I hope we can explore ways to bring books to children in the future. In particular – Shropshire Virtual School, Shrewsbury Film Festival, LGBT History, The Hive, Shrewsbury Museum, Shropshire Libraries, University Centre Shrewsbury, The Flaxmill, Shropshire Festivals and others.
A thank you to the wonderful schools who worked closely with us giving us the chance to quote and supply books, to encourage us to take authors in to inspire children to start or continue their exploration and enjoyment of books and reading.
A thank you to those small businesses who helped us offer a wide range of activities and fun in our wonderful woodland room. In particular – LovelyLand, Mini First Aid, Jake Evans (amazing storyteller), Heather Smallbone - Reflexology & Baby Massage, Sing and Sign, Pyjama Drama, Baby Ballet, Ready Steady, Yoga with Sasha, Alison Dodd with her wonderful music sessions, The Wonky Pocket, Baby Bonding and Theia and Bug.
A thank you to local artists who have helped us fill our shop & keep our trade local whenever we could. In particular - Matt Sewell (author and illustrator who created some wonderful windows), Emma Chadwick Illustration & Louise Tate Illustration.
A thank you to those authors who came to support us and ran wonderful events either in the shop or in schools helping to inspire the next generation of readers.
Finally, a huge thank you to all those customers who recognised the challenges we have been facing and who have supported us throughout the last few months.
Keep reading and supporting other independent bookshops.
With love and thanks to you all
Louise, Jon, Becky, Emma, Lucy and Ellie
