A huge THANK YOU! we have reached our target.
We wanted to provide 207 Shropshire looked after children with books this Christmas and thanks to you all for your amazing support we reached our target with enough books for 210 children. We also provided additional books to the foodbank.
Special thanks to Opportunity Pre-School in Shrewsbury who made a group donation from the children to celebrate their 30th Birthday and also to Broseley CE Primary who got the whole of their community involved in providing hampers to raffle. Broseley raised enough to provide 42 books and we matched their efforts and provided 42 additional books to Broseley Foodbank who they had also been working with as a thank you gift from us at Button and Bear.
Rose Head of the Virtual School in Shropshire visited us earlier in the week to choose books for the children and to thank everyone for such fantastic support. Shropshire Virtual School already provides books to primary school children but children joining the care system recently miss out on these books. In addition, children below the age of 4 and over the age of 11 do not get any. Because of your generosity it means they will all receive a book.
The gift of a book means so much to a looked after child. It means that someone else is thinking about them; they have something of their very own to take with them if they move placements; a book they can lose themselves in and a tool to help improve their literacy.
In 2018 only 51% of looked after children achieved the expected standard in reading across KS1 & KS2 compared with 75% of all other children.
In the New Year we will be launching a set of new initiatives to help children access books.
