Button & Bear is a family owned and run business. Louise & Jon opened Button & Bear on 16th September 2016 with the help of the Gruffalo.
Family members include Becky who manages the shop (daughter no. 2), Emma who provides the artwork & design features of the shop (daughter no. 1) Lucy & Ellie (daughters 3 & 4) who regularly work in the shop.
Louise oversees all the development work of the shop. Jon is responsible for all the behind the scenes work in gaps from his day job as a Cyber Security Consultant.
To support the family we are really lucky to have a wonderful team of staff: Jessie who is assistant manager in her time away from her own business Theia & Bug; Ami (her own business is The Wonky Pocket) Naomi (her own business is Briar Rose bookbinders) Sue, Hayley, Sian, Alice, Laura & Rebecca. We are also very lucky to have some volunteers who help us when they are available.
Louise has loved books all her life and wants everyone to understand the importance of an early introduction to books and stories. Louise worked for a range of different organisations promoting education to non-traditional learners with a focus on breaking the inter-generational cycle of illiteracy. Louise joined the charity Booktrust where she worked on the early years programme Bookstart before becoming Head of Social Inclusion, Head of Research and then Director of Programmes responsible for developing and delivering reading programmes across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The aim of the bookshop is to provide a wide range of books to inspire parents and children to help them develop a love or reading. We also stock a small number of books around parenting & books for those of us interested in children's literature and illustration.
If we don't have a book in stock then we can usually order it in within 24-48 hours (subject to availability). We can also post books out to you.
If you can't see what you want please do ask so that we can get it in.
THE WOODLAND ROOM
Down a flight of stairs we have a hidden Woodland room with grass on the floor and a wooden cottage. This room is decorated as an ‘outdoor space’ indoors.
This room hosts our own rhymetime, storytime and craft sessions, book clubs and birthday parties each week. We also have regular author visits and book signings.
We also work with a number of partners to offer Baby Ballet, Yoga for parents, Pyjama Drama, Sling Swing and lots of messy play sessions with Ready Steady Let's Get Messy.
